Por regla general (exactamente 73 veces por cada 100) cada riñón recibe una arteria voluminosa, la arteria renal, la cual proporciona asimismo algunos ramos a la cápsula adiposa. La arteria renal cuyo calibre no es mayor de 6 a 7 mm. nace de la aorta y se dirige en sentido casi transversal hacia afuera, cruzando sucesivamente los pilares del diafragma y los psoas mayor y menor.
